Our library is host to volumes on the local area, with various rare and out-of-print books such as Smith's History of the Colony of Nova Caesaria or New Jersey, Schermerhorn's History of Burlington, N.J., and De Cou's Burlington, a Provincial Capital. Revolutionary War in Burlington County 1849 1859 1860 1876
Archival Resources
- Photographs: Family members, historic buildings, Burlington County scenes from mid-1800s to the present and over 60 collections of local photographers works.
- Deeds: Our collection contains over 100 deeds, the earliest one is from 1676, and others are primarily from 1700s and 1800s. These are useful resources in conjunction with the Colonial Conveyances and West Jersey Proprietors Survey records in the library.
- Maps: Original maps in our collection include 1849 & 1859 maps of Burlington County, and the 1860 map of Philadelphia and Environs. We have a large collection of Revolutionary War maps relating to battles fought in New Jersey and routes of the armies. The map collection also includes maps showing land taken up from the Indians, location of early forges and furnaces, the early maps of Burlington City with location of lot owners and buildings, route of old Salem road, and location of property owners along Rancocas Road in 1830.
- Rare books: Our rare book collection consists of over 100 books, including books printed by Isaac Collins: The Constitution of New Jersey, 1774 - Bibles -Seward's The History of the Rise, Increase, and Progress of the Christian People called Quakers, 1774. Also, Original editions of Astronomy and Geometry, published in 1824 by Burlington County educator, John Gummere, later first president of Haverford College. As one of our historic houses is the birth place of James Fenimore Cooper, we have a number of early editions of Cooper's works.
- Original papers of Burlington County Historians: George DeCou and Nathaniel Ewan
- Manuscript collections of family letters and papers: Civil War letters and diaries - unpublished historical material. Originals of Burlington County artist John Collins sketches and lithographs. Early cookbooks and recipes Letters and documents pertaining to early Quaker families and history Student copybooks - 18th & 19th century, good examples of school work.
- Business records (Examples: Atsion records, 9 boxes. Moorestown pursuing and detective agency, 2 boxes. New Jersey Abolition Society - 2 boxes.)
- Almanacs: 1700s to the present some with early medical remedies, jokes, and short stories
- Scrapbooks: Donated by various individuals containing historical articles and pictures from newspapers, magazines, and family papers relating to places in Burlington County.
- Wills: 41 original wills, including those of some early settlers of West Jersey dated in the 1600s and 1700s.
- Posters and Broadsides: A fascinating collection depicting Burlington County history: The establishment of the County Courthouse in Mount Holly - 1795 The constitution of the first Agricultural Society established in the1790s Horticultural information about early nurseries in the area Recruiting posters from various wars Businesses and auctions flyers
